So, what’s the secret
to a healthier lifestyle? 2 of the biggest factors are exercise and watching
what you eat. Adding these five nutrients to your diet is a great place
to start.
- Soy – Soy has an impressive resume. Adding
soy to your diet has been shown to lower cholesterol, reduce the risk
of heart attack, help women manage hot flashes and it’s high in
iron. Add products that provide 10 grams of soy protein per serving,
three times a day, the American Heart Association claims that this will
lower and help manage your cholesterol.
- Fiber – Studies have shown that dietary fiber
clearly lowers your blood cholesterol. High-fiber foods are also digested
slowly, which keeps them from causing blood sugar spikes. Fiber also
helps to keep us regular and aids in weight control. With our passage
to processed foods, most of us should double our fiber intake to reap
its benefits.
- Antioxidants – Think color! Foods that are
red, green, orange or deep purple contain health-enhancing nutrients
that protect against heart disease and cancers. These foods also improve
your memory, sense of balance and your cognitive skills.
- Calcium – Dairy products are your best source
of calcium. Skim milk, low-fat yogurt and low-fat cheeses are great
to help avoid saturated fats. While adding calcium to your diet be sure
to add weight-bearing exercises and walk whenever possible. Take the
stairs, park far from the mall…your bones will thank you later.
- Water – Most of us do not drink enough water.
Water is needed to flush toxins, hydrate tissue and keep energy levels
up. Water also helps fiber do its job. If plain water isn’t your
thing, try adding fruit slices or a sprig of mint.
Change
your diet slowly…take one step at a time!
